George Bonga was an important fur trader. He worked for the American Fur Company. In 1832, he obtained his license to trade, then became an independent fur trader. Bonga held ports in Leech Lake, Lake Platte and Otter Tail.

George Bonga pursued and captured a murderer. In 1837 during the winter time at Fond du Lac, an Ojibwe man was accused of killing a young man called Alfred Aitkin. Alfred was a son of a fur trader who was in charge of a department of the American Fur company at Fond du Lac. He was also Bonga’s first supervisor. George Bonga pursued the suspect five days and six nights. He brought back the suspect for trial at Fort Snelling. Chegawaskung was found guilty. It was the first criminal trial in Minnesota.
